In most of Auckland’s classic villas, you’re bound to find a few sticks of South Pacific Timber somewhere in the bones of the house — and this refined renovation in Saint Mary’s Bay is no exception.
Brought to life by Rhombus Construction and designed by Jones Architects, the project seamlessly blends old-world charm with contemporary living. It honours the original villa’s heritage character while introducing subtle upgrades that ensure long-lasting durability and everyday comfort.
Honouring Heritage Through Timber
A wide range of colonial profiles from South Pacific Timber was used throughout the home — including skirtings, architraves, bolection mouldings, dado rails, and ceiling battens. These profiles were carefully selected to match the era of the home while offering clean, crisp detailing that speaks to the craftsmanship of a modern renovation.
Externally, Horizontal Bevel Back Weatherboards in H3.2 treated pine provide a classic villa aesthetic with the strength and durability needed for the future. The TG&V veranda flooring brings timeless street appeal, while Kwila hardwood decking enhances outdoor functionality and flow.
Blending the Old with the New
While the renovation prioritised period accuracy and traditional details, modern sensibility plays its part — from material upgrades and moisture protection through to improved spatial flow. The result is a villa that feels like it has always been there — just a little more refined, a little more functional, and ready for the decades ahead.
This project is a showcase of how the right timber details can breathe new life into a heritage home — staying true to its story, while quietly futureproofing it for modern living.
